Lot Maintenance

Habitat keeps an inventory of empty lots that we can build on in the future.  These lots need to be maintained by shoveling snow on sidewalks and mowing grass.

Brief Description: Lot maintenance volunteers help maintain and care for empty lots that Habitat owns but is not ready yet to build on.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • In summer – mow the grass at these vacant lots on a regular basis.
  • In winter – shovel the sidewalk (if applicable) at these vacant lots within 24 hours after each snowfall.

Tools to be used by Lot Maintenance volunteers include:

  • Your own lawn mower and gas.
  • Your own shovel or snow blower (and gas).

Other Information: Lot maintenance volunteers assist us in caring for our properties that we are not ready to build on yet.  It is vital that Habitat for Humanity maintains a stock of lots that we can offer to families for their future Habitat homes.  It is also vital that we maintain these lots by mowing the grass and shoveling sidewalks on a regular basis.  This is required by municipalities and also helps us maintain good neighbor relations.  Volunteers assisting with this provide a vital service to Habitat for Humanity!  When we are not able to find volunteers to take care of our empty lots, we have to pay professionals to do it, so volunteers keep our costs lower and help aid us in providing more resources to build homes with local families in need!
