Most easily described as a domestic version of the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps VISTA’s are Volunteers In Service To America. Founded in 1965 by JFK, VISTA members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit agency. With passion, commitment and hard work, they create and expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
While serving, VISTA members acquire new skills, relationships, experiences and satisfaction from helping others. Funded by the Federal Government, they receive a modest monthly stipend for living expenses aimed to encourage understanding while dealing with those at or below the poverty level.
Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity benefits from several VISTA’s working in family services, outreach and the ReStore. Summer VISTA’s also contribute to the construction and administrative staff as well as the ReStore.
