The Kolar Family

Kolar FamilyOriginally from Bosnia, Dzemail and Dzenita Kolar fled their native war torn country for the United States. In hopes of providing a better life for their family, which includes their two children Dzenan, and Irma, the Kolar’s settled in Neenah after visiting and falling in love with the city and its Bosnian community. The family lived in an apartment, but it presented some problems. Police responded to the complex regarding domestic abuse reports, there were maintenance issues such as ice building up on the insides of windows, and the landlord was not responsive when there was no heat. But the Kolar’s are now living the American dream of homeownership.

By partnering with Habitat for Humanity, Dzemail and Dzenita are able to provide their children with the safe and consistent home life they deserve and that would not have been possible in their native country. “We have learned that nothing is impossible if you work hard at it. Life has put a lot of obstacles in front of us, but they have made us stronger,” said Dzemail. “I learned that family and friends support is the most important thing to keep you going.”

Irma and her brother Dzenan were excited about picking out their own rooms and having their own space. The Kolar children know how special and important their new Habitat home is. “It’s a big gift. I’m just happy we have a home here,” said Dzenan.
